Skipping over the first experiment, we start with Experiment 6.2 – A Simulation of Plastic Rock.
In this experiment we see how rock can behave like something between a liquid and a solid.
After filling a pie pan with cornstarch, add water and stir.
After it is evenly mixed, add more cornstarch.
The more you stir, the harder it becomes to stir!
Now stop! After a bit, what happens? It liquefies!
Now pick some up in your hand….
It becomes a solid…now squeeze it into a ball and then relax your hand…. what happens to the solid?
It’s hard to see, but, the ball turns back into a liquid!
Experiment 6.3 – Making an Electromagnet
In this experiment we take a non-magnetized object and magnetize it forcing electricity to flow around it.
My enthusiastic tinkering son had this experiment done quicker than I could photograph!
First, strip the ends of the covered wire so the bare wire is exposed. Wrap the wire around the nail. Use tape to attach the bare conductor on one end of the wire to one of the battery terminals. Do the same to the other end. With a gloved hand, touch the nail to a paper clip. What happens?
Experiment 6.4 – A Model of Plate Tectonics
In this experiment we will use an egg as a model to show the idea of plate tectonics.
On a hard boiled egg, use a marker to draw a circle somewhere on the shell of the egg.
Next, use a dull knife and cut around the circle you drew on the egg. Now, placing your thumb on the cut circle, gently move it around. The circle of the shell represents a plate of the earth’s crust. The egg white is the plastic rock of the mantle. As you move the shell you are simulating plate tectonics!
