Apologia Educational Ministries has long been a provider of science and bible curriculum. Their latest release, Exploring Creation Field Trip Journal, colorfully bridges the gap between hands-on schooling documentation and memory preservation.
The journal contains 64 pages of high quality paper broken down into 6 sections: field trip tips, ideas, exploration maps, “My Special Spot”, “As I See It” and the awesome field trips pages themselves.
Field trip prep tips include things to do, the week before, the night before, on the way and at the field trip. This is a great tool to have as back up no matter how long you’ve been a “teacher in the field”.
The Ideas page has just about every type of field trip genre you could image. Plants, Animals, Space, Human body, History and Government, Culture and more. An additional link is proved to the Apologia website for additional materials, virtual field trips and state maps.
There are special pages for places you’ve explored statewide, countrywide and worldwide!
For each specific trip, the 2 page spread has special areas for a map, books to read, emergency contact plan, things to do and see, photos or drawings and plenty of room to journal stories and memories.
Next are the unique “My Special Spot” pages. These 4 pages are seasonally inspired and created to help children see the changes that take place in a specific spot over a period of time.
“Your Special Spot” is a trip to a small section of wildlife. This can be in your yard, a field a forest or a park. It must be wild, which means that no one maintains it. It just grows as it wants.” – Apologia Creation Field Trip Nature Journal
So, 4 times a year you and your child will visit the EXACT spot to explore while taking note of weather, temperature, color, vegetation, animals, etc.
“As I See it” pages are an artist’s delight. Instead of documenting a trip, fun prompts are posted to inspire your young artist ….Movement, Reflection & Shadows, Predators @ Prey, Heavens & Earth and more.
Our experience with Exploring Creation Field Trip Journal
I have 4 children. We have seasons where we take abundant field trips and seasons where we don’t. On account of this, it would probably not be possible to use up the journal within a year. We’ll use this journal over time as a great way to add to our portfolio and keep treasured memories.
And, our Special Spot pages prove to be a bit of a challenge as living in the topics doesn’t give us 4 seasons and changes between our seasons are very subtle indeed! Quite comically, our kids chose the beach as their favorite place. In noting their particular spot on the beach, it will be interesting to see what subtle changes we can observe!
For our first field trip, we choose St. Augustine! My daughter took over the task and turned the page into more of a scrapbook with maps of the area, receipts from businesses we purchased from and of course pictures!
Next the 3 oldest decided to document their first English Country Dance Ball in true scrapbook style!
Filling out these gorgeously illustrated pages was such a joy! The end result is a great keepsake to show an evaluator, family member plus document past fun learning times.
